Job Summary:
The Assistant Director for Pupil Personnel Services is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Committee on Special Education, including supporting the Preschool Chairperson and ensuring compliance with relevant state and federal regulations. This role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of special education processes and regulations. The Chairperson will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to create appropriate educational plans for students with disabilities, monitor progress, and foster collaboration among educators, families, and outside agencies.
Qualifications:
Certification:
Certified as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).
New York State Special Education, School Psychology Certification or Related Services certification.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of classroom experience and/or supervisory experience required.
Experience working in the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) or Committee on Special Education (CSE) preferred.
Experience with the development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs and 504 Plans.
Knowledge and Skills:
Depth of knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and NYS Part 200 regulations.
Strong understanding of special education processes, evaluation, and service delivery models.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively present and explain complex regulations and educational plans to a variety of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and Oversee CSE Functions:
Lead the Committee on Special Education in making decisions regarding the placement and services for students with disabilities.
Provide guidance to the Preschool Chairperson to ensure proper oversight and implementation of preschool special education services.
Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and NYS Part 200 regulations.
Conduct regular meetings with CSE staff to review processes and ensure the alignment of services with student needs.
Collaborate with Stakeholders:
Work closely with district administrators, teachers, special education providers, parents, and outside agencies to develop, implement, and review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
Foster a collaborative, team-oriented approach to special education services and support families in navigating the IEP process.
Provide professional development and training for staff to ensure they are up to date on current regulations and best practices.
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation:
Monitor CSE procedures to ensure all activities meet state and federal regulations and timelines.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of CSE meetings, IEP development, and placement decisions.
Maintain knowledge of changes in laws, regulations, and district policies related to special education services.
Leadership and Supervision:
Lead and mentor staff involved in CSE processes, including IEP team members and preschool personnel.
Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff

Work Environment: This position will be based in a school district office, with regular visits to schools and attendance at CSE meetings. Occasional after school hours may be required to accommodate scheduling of meetings or training sessions.
