Position Summary:
The BCSD Director of Physical Education, Athletics, Health, and Recreation is responsible for the development, coordination, and maintenance of high-quality physical and health education as well as interscholastic athletic programs. Key responsibilities include designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating all program components; supervising and evaluating both certified and non-certified staff; developing and managing program budgets; ensuring equal access for all students; and leading ongoing staff and curriculum development efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of appropriate New York State certifications
- Five years of experience teaching Physical Education and/or Health
- Experience as a public school athletic coach
- Experience as a public-school administrator (preferred)
Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Oversight & Coordination:
- Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate all interscholastic athletic activities.
- Supervise district-wide physical education and health programs, including hiring, budgeting, staff development, curriculum writing, and responding to parent inquiries.
- Assume primary responsibility for the organization, staffing, and scheduling of all co-curricular and interscholastic athletic events, including fields and gyms, while considering academic schedules and other programming.
- Maintain permanent records for each sport, including win/loss records, notable achievements, varsity letters, honors, and athletic scholarships.
- Oversee the operation of the athletic program within the approved district budget.
- Prepare or oversee the timely completion of all required reports, records, lists, and other administrative documentation related to the athletic program.
- Coordinate the annual review and update of the athletic policies and staff handbook.
Staff Supervision & Development:
- Observe and supervise all coaches.
- Collaborate with building principals and local athletic organizations regarding the use of district athletic facilities.
- Foster positive school and community relations by keeping the Superintendent’s Office, administration, and public informed of athletic events through schedules, announcements, and media reporting.
- Attend and serve as the district liaison at athletic Section 9 meetings.
- Coordinate ongoing staff development and curriculum updates in alignment with the New York State standards for Physical and Health Education.
Facilities & Safety Management:
- Collaborate with the Buildings and Grounds Department to maintain and repair athletic fields and gymnasiums and make recommendations for facility improvements.
- Arrange for a school health professional or designated medical professional to be present at home football games and other sporting events where medical services are necessary.
- Arrange for security, supervision, and employment of officials for all home interscholastic games, scrimmages, as needed.
Student Support & Compliance:
- Address individual student concerns related to athletics, including discipline, suspension, exclusion, or removal from participation, in collaboration with administrative staff as appropriate.
- Assist in implementing and verifying academic eligibility requirements for all student-athletes.
- Enforce all Board policies, administrative directives, league rules, and state regulations related to physical education and athletics, including eligibility requirements.
Logistics & Operations:
- Coordinate transportation for athletic teams, including lodging and meals when necessary.
- Oversee the cleaning, storage, maintenance, and inventory of all athletic equipment.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee, consistent with the scope of employment and certification.
