Job Description

Position Overview:  Beacon City School District is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Literacy Specialist to support the implementation of evidence-based literacy practices grounded in the Science of Reading. The Literacy Specialist will serve as an instructional coach, collaborating with classroom teachers, interventionists, school administrators, and the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum to enhance literacy instruction, support data-informed decision-making, and build teacher capacity in delivering high-impact reading instruction.

  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide job-embedded coaching to K–5 classroom teachers and interventionists in effective reading instruction aligned with Science of Reading research.
  • Lead professional development sessions on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of high-quality, evidence-based literacy curricula and Tier 1 interventions (e.g., structured literacy approaches like Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, or LETRS-informed strategies).
  • Support teachers in analyzing and using student data (e.g., DIBELS, i-Ready, Acadience) to inform instruction and target interventions.
  • Collaborate with school and district leadership to align literacy practices with state standards and district goals.
  • Model effective instructional strategies in classrooms and provide actionable feedback to support student learning, as well as progress monitoring. 
  • Stay current with literacy research and trends and communicate best practices to staff.
  • Be willing to be trained and turn-key professional learning opportunities.
  • Support the classroom teachers in gathering relevant data for IST/MTSS meetings
     

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Literacy, Reading, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field.
  • Valid teaching certification; literacy or reading specialist certification, or special education.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of successful classroom teaching experience in elementary grades.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading and structured literacy practices.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring teachers is preferred.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic reading assessments and data-driven instruction.
  • Training or certification in evidence-based reading programs (e.g., LETRS, Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, Heggerty).
  • Experience with MTSS/RTI frameworks.
