The work of employees in this class is distinguished by responsibility for the efficient and economical cleaning and maintenance of a building on an assigned shift.  Work is performed under general supervision with some leeway for use of independent judgment in keeping the building up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of a number of custodial personnel.

 

Typical Work Activities:

 

  1. Supervises and participates in all building cleaning activities;
  2. Assigns tasks to subordinate, gives instructions in the use of building cleaning supplies, materials and equipment, and checks to see that assignments are carried out;
  3. Operates or checks the operation of oil, gas or coal-fired heating systems;
  4. Performs a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other building maintenance tasks;
  5. May supervise and participate in a variety of grounds keeping activities;
  6. Checks to ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and in readiness for all activities;
  7. Consults with superior regarding unusual maintenance problems and makes recommendations concerning the purchase of supplies, materials and equipment;
  8. Keeps simple activity records;
  9. Refurbishes wood floor surfaces;
  10. May, if necessary, be required to operate a school bus or delivery vehicle, if physically fit, qualified, and properly licensed.

Minimum Qualifications: One (1) year of full-time paid work experience which primarily involved institutional or commercial building cleaning and which included minor maintenance experience.

HEAD CUSTODIAN – FULL TIME

(7 am - 3 pm, Monday - Friday)

 

Anticipated Placement: Rombout Middle School

 

 

 

This is a working supervisory position which is responsible for the efficient and economical custodial and maintenance functions in school facilities and related facilities.  Incumbents lead and participate in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings and related equipment.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level employee with wide leeway for the exercise of independent judgment in keeping buildings and facilities up to approved standards of cleanliness and operation. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate custodial or maintenance personnel.

 

Typical Work Activities:

  1. Makes regular inspections of buildings and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance procedures and makes recommendations for improvements or new equipment;
  2. Schedules and assigns cleaning and maintenance work of subordinate personnel;
  3. Inspects and otherwise exercises control over maintenance work performed by outside contractors;
  4. Checks to ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked and in readiness for all activities; directs and assists in setups of facility for functions;
  5. Keeps records and makes reports of supplies used and activities carried on; may assist with the ordering of custodial supplies;
  6. Leads and participates in building cleaning and maintenance activities, such as dusting, moving furniture, sweeping, strip/waxing floors, cleaning windows, removing refuse, etc.;
  7. Reports any acts of vandalism or breakage to proper authorities;
  8. May operate or check the operation of heating system;
  9. Trains new employees and plans for appropriate orientation;
  10. May make recommendations regarding the employment, removal and discipline of personnel;
  11. Directs and participates in painting, vacuuming, snow and ice control activities.

Minimum Qualifications: Two (2) years of experience which primarily involved institutional or building cleaning and minor maintenance activities, one (1) year of which shall have involved supervisory responsibility.

Please note: The Beacon City School District anticipates multiple Custodial Worker openings for the 2026–2027 school year. The number, location, shift, and specific assignment of positions will be determined based on scheduling and staffing considerations.

Maintenance Mechanic207

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

 

This class involves a variety of building maintenance and repair tasks of a generally skilled nature.  Although employees in this class may, by reason of personal training and experience, devote more of their time to work of a single specialized field, they may be required to work along various building maintenance lines as the occasion demands.  Employees are expected to be able to perform or learn to perform a wide variety of duties within the field of building maintenance and repair, and may also be required to perform grounds maintenance tasks when necessary. The duties of this class differ from Maintenance Worker by reason of the more skilled nature of the work involved.  Incumbents perform their duties with wide latitude for independent planning or laying out of the working details.  In those cases where supervisory responsibilities are involved, the Maintenance Mechanic acts as foreman over a number of workers who perform maintenance and repair jobs of a less skilled nature.

 

Typical Work Activities:

 

  1. Supervises and/or performs skilled repairs to plumbing, steam lines, electric wiring and equipment, furniture, doors and windows, hardware and varied mechanical equipment and machinery;
  2. Installs shelving, storage cabinets and new hardware, and performs other skilled carpentry tasks;
  3. Does skilled painting work;
  4. Maintains and repairs central heating systems;
  5. Performs grounds maintenance and maintains athletic and playground facilities;
  6. Makes inspections of property to ascertain repair needs;
  7. Estimates material required for repairs;
  8. Obtains necessary permits, including Health Department requirements;
  9. Performs snow and ice control activities;
  10. May keep daily time and material records;
  11. May oversee seasonal help.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

EITHER:      (A) One year of work experience as a journeyman in a skilled trade, such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry or

                     steam-fitting; 

OR:             (B) Four years of experience in either general building construction or in building maintenance work; 

OR:             (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (A) and (B) above.

GROUNDSKEEPER

 

This is routine manual work in maintaining grounds and equipment found in a recreation program or at an institution or facility.  Work is performed under general supervision with assignments being outlined in detail and spot-checked by inspections.  Although it is not a normal function of this position, supervision may be exercised over part time and/or temporary employees.

 

Typical Work Activities:

 

  1. Mows, rakes and cuts grass;
  2. Cleans grounds of trash, debris, and similar material;
  3. Maintains lawns, grounds, playing fields, and playground equipment;
  4. Levels, grades and removes stones;
  5. Removes snow from walkways and other areas;
  6. Spreads sand and salt;
  7. Assists in miscellaneous activities such as moving heavy objects;
  8. Assists in other groundskeeping activities, such as seeding, fertilization, and watering lawns;
  9. Transplants seedlings and plants and cares for trees and shrubs, including clipping and pruning;
  10. Performs general maintenance tasks in the preparation and care of baseball, football and soccer fields as well as fences, goals, stands and other related equipment;
  11. Operates incinerator, removes garbage and delivers garbage to landfill;
  12. Maintains equipment used in grounds maintenance;
  13. Assists in maintenance of roads and driveways;
  14. Performs maintenance tasks on golf courses;
  15. May make minor repairs to buildings;
  16. Drives motor equipment as required for maintenance tasks;
  17. May perform minor tasks of a semiskilled nature such as carpentry, welding, painting, plumbing, and minor electrical maintenance;
  18. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:  No minimum qualifications.

 

Special Requirement: May require possession of a valid Driver License to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at time of application and to maintain the position.  A department head may require the possession of the appropriate level Commercial Driver's License.
