BUS DRIVER - DISPATCHER

 

This position involves responsibility for dispatching buses, scheduling drivers, keeping time records, collecting bus fare monies, and occasional bus driving. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level employee. Direction is exercised over Bus Drivers.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  1. Dispatches buses and drivers on assigned routes;
  2. Keeps time records on drivers, recording time in, time out, lunch breaks, and overtime;
  3. Schedules drivers, ensuring proper shift rotation and coverage for all bus routes;
  4. Instructs new drivers in procedures and the proper use of equipment;
  5. Answers telephones and gives information on bus schedules and routes and receives and checks complaints;
  6. May operate a bus on a regular schedule and/or on special occasions;
  7. May conduct annual road and written tests of bus drivers (If 19-A Certified, please see special requirements);
  8. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience driving a bus with experience in the use of two-way radio equipment. Any work experience may be substituted for formal education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid appropriate level Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required;  
  • 19-A Examiner Certification and School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI) Certification preferred.

NOTE: In school districts drivers must be at least 2l years of age. In addition, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education. Where applicable, all candidates must meet the requirements for Bus Drivers set forth in the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law and any other statutory requirements that apply.

BUS DRIVERS

 

This is manual work of average difficulty requiring skill in the operation of an automotive vehicle used to transport students and/or passengers. The operator is responsible for the safety and conduct of the passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed to the operator for independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  1. Operates a school bus or other bus on regular schedule and/or on special occasions;
  2. Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
  3. Reports any mechanical defect to immediate superior;
  4. Checks and fills vehicle with fuel;
  5. Instructs students or adult passengers about safety practices when entering and/or leaving bus;
  6. Maintains orderly conduct of students or adult passengers while on bus;
  7. Completes accident and vehicle maintenance reports;
  8. May clean interior and exterior of assigned vehicle;
  9. May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle;
  10. May be required to administer first aid to students or adult passengers injured on bus;
  11. May install and remove tire chains when necessary;
  12. Does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a valid appropriate level Driver License or Commercial Driver License at the time of appointment (varies by appointing authority).

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations;
  • Ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions;
  • Ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle;
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions;
  • Ability to get along well with students and/or adult passengers and command their respect;
  • Mechanical aptitude;
  • Mental alertness; dependability;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position:
    • Standard #1: Bus Steps - 3 trips up & down the bus steps in 30 seconds
    • Standard #2: Throttle to Brake - 10 Throttle to Brake Cycles in 10 seconds
    • Standard #3: Brake/Clutch - Hold Brake 3 Seconds 5 Times/Hold Clutch throughout
    • Standard #4: Door - Manually open and close entrance door 3 times
    • Standard #5: Hand Controls – Wheel to Control to Wheel in 8 seconds (4 times)
    • Standard #6: Emergency Exit – From Driver Seat and out Exit in 20 seconds
    • Standard #7: Weight Drag – 125 lbs 30 feet in 30 seconds

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

In School Districts, drivers must be at least 21 years of age.

In addition, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.

Where applicable, all candidates must meet the requirements for Bus Drivers set forth in the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law and any other statutory requirements that apply.

BUS MONITORS

 

This work involves responsibility for the routine supervision and care of school-age children as well as the maintaining order on school buses, supervising the conduct of problem students and interceding in student altercations.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  1. Monitors students in parking lots and supervises the loading of buses;
  2. Accompanies students to and from school to maintain order on buses;
  3. Supervises and/or attempts to calm students;
  4. Informs superiors of observations of student behavior;
  5. May assist in rendering first aid in emergencies.

  • Ability to get along well with school-age children and command their respect;
  • Good observation;
  • Personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position:
